Career Prospects
The programme focuses on the sustainable reorientation of the working areas of architecture, building, and the city, either from professional practice, research or public service. The improvement of the built environment is the main instrument for the sustainable transformation of our society. This means reconsidering and reorienting the activity of professionals who, until now, have been devoted to urban growth.
It is therefore essential to develop a training profile that ensures an integrated knowledge of all the aspects that converge in this field as well as the strategic approach needed to implement them in practice or to continue developing the theoretical and operational problems that intervention demands.
We are committed in training new professionals for the future development of architecture and the built environment in these terms and in preparing researchers to develop doctoral theses oriented to the operational needs of the field.
Professional scenarios
The programme trains students to become entrepreneurs and agents of change towards the sustainability of the built environment. The curriculum is specifically aimed at professionals in the fields of architecture, building, rehabilitation, and urban planning. Once the 60 ECTS of the programme have been completed, graduates will be able to:
- Assess and organise information related to sustainability and architecture.
- Know and understand the impact of the social demand for sustainability in the fields of architecture – design, building, city, and territory – and its redefinition.
- Know and be able to describe the material flows that determine urban metabolism and understand their relationship with urban spaces.
- Diagnose in order to identify opportunities for intervention in the urban environment that are suitable for its transformation.
- Define sustainable interventions in urban areas and develop projects that determine them, especially in the field of building, urban design, and intervention in infrastructures.
Doctoral degree
The master provides access to doctoral studies at the UPC, aimed at the elaboration and defence of a PhD thesis. If eligible, graduates will be directed by faculty from the master's degree either in the programme of:
Sustainability. Research into sustainability brings together specialists from many fields and backgrounds with varying disciplinary perspectives, but all of whom share the common desire to contribute to the development of our societies and increase the options and abilities available to future generations to set their own path.
Architectural Design. The central theme of the practice of architecture is architectural design, which must bring together construction, spatial organisation and use via the aesthetic, ethical, and cognitive dimensions of the design process, focusing on the project as a design intervention that is able to connect geography and history, climate and society, and nature and culture.
Urbanism. The main aim of the programme is to produce highly qualified researchers in the field of urban planning. It revolves around study and academic reflection on key topics and issues in the history of urbanism and in contemporary urban planning, as well as forms of analysis and intervention at both the regional and urban scale.
